Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week is in April
Each year, Homeland Security and Emergency Management, in collaboration with the National Weather Service, use this week to remind everyone about seasonal severe weather threats.
Statewide tornado drills are typically scheduled in April. The 2026 date is Thursday, April 16. The first-time outdoor warning sirens sound at 1:45 p.m. as a drill and are intended for businesses and institutions. The second time they sound at 6:45 p.m. is geared toward families and second-shift workers.

Winter in Minnesota is predictably harsh, with inevitable snow, frigid temperatures, and ice-covered roads. High winds can make outdoor conditions dangerous.
While preparing for winter, it's essential to refresh our safety knowledge. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management partners with the National Weather Service for the annual Winter Hazard Awareness Week. This campaign educates Minnesotans on how to minimize winter hazards and enjoy a safe, enjoyable season.
