Street Sweeping

The City of Ramsey performs street sweeping in early spring and late fall. 

Spring Sweeping

In spring, the city cleans the roads to remove sand and debris from winter. This cleaning usually starts in late March or early April. It takes about three weeks of ten-hour workdays to finish the job. The crews use two sweepers, a dump truck to collect the debris, and a water truck to control dust.

The cleaning begins at the north end of the city, where the lack of curbs allows snowmelt to expose road edges. Once the weather is suitable, the crew moves south to areas with underground stormwater systems. Residents help by parking their vehicles off the streets during this time. This allows the crew to collect as much sand as possible, preventing it from entering the stormwater system and raising clean-up costs.

Fall Sweeping

Fall sweeping starts in late September or early October. The timeline is not quite as critical as spring sweeping. In the fall, leaves are of concern, and areas with heavy foliage are swept last so that as many leaves as possible can be collected at once. Neighborhoods seal-coated earlier in the summer are also re-swept to pick up any loose rock left behind.
