Facts About the Ramsey’s Water Treatment Plant

The City of Ramsey opened a new water treatment plant (WTP) in Spring 2026. It is located next to the Ramsey Public Works facility on Jasper Street. The plant plays a crucial role in improving the quality of our municipal drinking water.

Why did we build a new water treatment plant?

The new WTP is designed to remove iron and manganese from our municipal drinking water, helping us meet the government’s safety standards for clean water. The plant started to provide treated water to our residents in early 2026. You will notice better water quality, less cloudiness, and fewer stains on your fixtures, clothes, and surfaces over time.

Will your water look discolored during start-up?

When we first turned on the new water treatment plant, it stirred up deposits of iron and manganese from the main water pipes. This resulted in reddish, brown, or black-colored water for a short period, which has now cleared.

What should you do if you see discolored water?

Try to minimize the use of hot water until your cold water runs clearer, as water heaters can accumulate sediment. It is also a good idea to flush your water heater, as it may have some buildup. If the discoloration does not resolve after a few months, please contact Public Works at 763-433-9839.

Will water taste or smell different?

You may have noticed some temporary changes in the taste, smell, or appearance of the water since we started up the new plant. However, over time, the water should look clearer and cleaner, and problems like discoloration should be reduced, even during regular maintenance activities like flushing hydrants.

Was the water safe to drink during the start-up?

Absolutely! Throughout this process, we will ensure that our water continues to meet all health and safety standards. Changes in color or taste are only cosmetic and not harmful. We’re working closely with health officials to monitor the water quality.

Did the water pressure change?

Some people may have noticed slight changes in water pressure when we tested the new equipment, but everything should have returned to normal.

Do fire hydrants still need to be flushed?

Flushing hydrants helps keep our water supply clean by moving water through the system and clearing out any loose minerals. We usually do this twice a year, but with the new plant, we might only need to do it once a year!

Who is in charge of checking water quality?

City water operators and certified laboratories regularly check water quality. The Minnesota Department of Health also reviews the data to ensure everything remains safe.
